We saw Adelie Penguins in the Weddell Sea on ice floes and in a large rookery on Paulet Island.
Paulet Island is the site of an Adelie Penguin rookery.
Adelie Penguins are the ones that you see most commonly at ocean
theme parks such as Sea World. They have the classic black on the
back and white on the front penguin markings. Their heads are
completely black, with no white markings.
Background information about the Adelie Penguin.
Large chunks of ice are scattered across the stony beach.
There is a steep wave cut above the beach. The rocks above the
beach haven't been eroded into smooth round cobbles.
A large ice floe carrying many
Adelie Penguins drifts slowly past the shore.
The trail to the rookery ascends a tricky slope of loose,
irregular stones that are covered with a thick lubricating layer
of guano.
Adelie Penguin chicks are gray all over.
There is nothing for the chicks to do when it
snows but put up with it.
This homely chick is partway through molting.
Once a chick responds to an adult's call, the
adult starts running away from the chick.
Hear an Adelie Penguin chick chasing an
adult. If you listen closely, you can hear the patter of the
penguins' feet as they run past.
The chick has to chase the adult through the
rookery, pleading plaintively the whole way, until it decides
that it is indeed its own chick.
A
large population of Adelie Penguins has settled on this ice floe.
The large, low-lying floes in the Weddell Sea are very popular
with the penguins. The penguins fly out of the water and land on
top of the ice, where they gather in large numbers.
Adelie Penguins toboggan on their bellies to go
faster.
